2020 Elections: Second time since 1992 two New candidates will contest Berekum East Parliamentay seat


Before the Parliamentary and General elections this year, I will be looking into some dynamics in Election of Parliamentarians in Berekum, especially Berekum East constituency.

For the Second time in this Fourth Republic, the battle for the parliamentary seat will be between two new candidates. 2012 was the first time we experienced same in Berekum, that was NPP's candidate and current MP for Berekum East Hon Dr Kwabena Twum Nuamah winning over Hon Dr George Atta Boateng of the NDC.

In this year's elections shall be between recently elected Paliamentary aspirant Hon Nelson Kyeremeh of the NPP and Eld Ampaabeng kyeremeh of the NDC who was unopposed during their primaries.

*Results of Parliamentary Elections in Berekum since 1992*

*1992:*
As we know the New Patriotic Party boycotted this elections and so no candidate was presented. So The NDC's candidate at that time Mr J. H. Owusu Acheamppng was elected as MP for Berekum.

*1996:*
In 1996 the incumbent MP was contested by an NPP aspirant.
J. H. Owusu Acheamppng (NDC) defeated Mr Adusah of the NPP who was a new candidate.

*2000*
This time Hon Nkrabea Effa Dartey won the Berekum seat from the NDC.
Hon Effah Dartey (NPP)= 23,288 votes
Hon J. H. Owusu Acheamppng (NDC) = 12,395 votes.

*2004*
In this elections we had a new candidate, Hon Lord Oppong Stephen of the NDC battling with the incumbent, but NPP still maintained the seat.
Hon Effah Dartey (NPP) =28,561
Hon Lord Oppong Stephen (NDC) =19,047

*2008*
This time around the NPP presented a new candidate in the person of Hon Kwaku Agyenim Boateng who's now the MP for Berekum West, as against Hon Lord Oppong Stephen who had contested in the previous elections.
Hon Agyenim Boateng (NPP)= 24,915
Hon Lord Oppong Stephen (NDC)= 21,898

*2012*
This was the first time under this 4th republic Berekum had two new candidates, after the creation of the Berekum West constituency Hon Agyenim Boateng contested that seat. The NPP presented Hon Dr Kwabena Twum Nuamah whiles the NDC's Hon Dr George Atta Boateng was also a new candidate.
Dr Kwabena Twum Nuamah(Npp)= 22,687
Dr Atta Boateng (NDC) = 16,517

*2016*
In the last elections NDC presented a new candidate Hon Oppoku Boakye Yiadom, the then MCE.
Hon Oppoku Boakye Yiadom (NDC) =15,848
Dr Kwabena Twum Nuamah (NPP) = 23,057

In this year's elections, we have a repeation of 2012. Two new candidates.
